The Pairing

One of Us by Craig DiLouie

The Reasoning

In a brutal world, we cling to acts of kindness. Sally is one of the kindest characters in One of Us, and the simple gesture of bringing refreshments of sweet tea and lemonade to the mutant children working her father’s farm results in an unlikely friendship between Sally and Dog. They shared hopes of a better future, and pledged to protect one another.

This drink is dedicated to their friendship, and to all the children who deserved better.

The Recipe

(serves 2-4)

You will need:

  • Small saucepan
  • Tall glass
  • Ice
  • Rosemary
  • 4 oz Honey
  • 4 oz Water
  • 8 oz Lemon Juice (fresh preferred, bottled ok)
  • 2 oz Vodka (per drink)(Non-Alcoholic Substitute: Omit this ingredient)
  • 1 oz Triple Sec (per drink)(Non-Alcoholic Substitute: 1 oz Orange Juice)

Take your saucepan and add honey and water. Heat and stir until thoroughly mixed. Remove from heat, add lemon juice and stir. This is your lemonade concentrate. Any leftover mixture can be stored in a jar in the fridge, or frozen in a ziploc bag if desired.

Fill your glass with ice. Measure your vodka and triple sec into the glass, and add a few large sprigs of rosemary. Add 2-4 oz of the lemonade concentrate (depending on glass size), stir, and add water to taste.

I’m Wol, resident bartender for the Inn, and maker of fantasy themed cocktails. I’m a big advocate for quality self-published novels. In addition to reading, I enjoy videogames, cooking, gardening, geeky cross-stitch, and, more recently, D&D. Outside of fantasy I read a lot of classics and I have a fondness for noir. My favorite fantasy authors include: Robin Hobb, Philip Pullman, Liam Perrin, Terry Pratchett, Anna Smith Spark, K.S. Villoso, Josiah Bancroft and Quenby Olson.
